What decorative glass is

Decorative glass is glass worked for its looks as well as its function: leaded, sandblasted, brilliant cut or patterned. It adds privacy, character and light to doors, screens, panels and windows. AJ Glass designs and makes decorative glasswork to order, from traditional leaded panels to clean modern frosted designs.

Techniques

Each technique gives a different effect, and we will help you pick the right one. As well as the three below, we offer brilliant and crystal cut patterns, used alone or set into a design.

Leaded and stained glass: coloured or clear leaded panels, from traditional patterns like Queen Anne and Jacobean to Mackintosh-style and modern designs.

Sandblasted glass: a frosted, etched finish that adds privacy while still letting light through, as a design, a border or a full frost.

Patterned and textured glass: a large range of patterned glass designs for privacy, style and light.

What to know before you buy

With decorative glass, people want to know it can match a period property, double as safety glass where needed, and be made to their own design. Here is the short version.

Made to your design

We design and make decorative glass to order, so a panel can match a period property, an existing design or an idea of your own. We work it up with you, make it in our workshop, and fit it or supply it for your joiner.

Safety glass where it is needed

Where the location calls for safety glass, such as a door or low-level panel, we can build the decorative effect into toughened or laminated glass, so it meets the regulations and still looks the part.

Traditional or modern

From traditional leaded patterns like Queen Anne and Jacobean to Mackintosh-style and clean modern frosting, we match the style to your property rather than offering one fixed look.

Decorative glass questions

The things we're asked most, answered straight.

What kinds of decorative glass do you make?

We make leaded and stained glass, sandblasted and frosted designs, brilliant and crystal cut patterns and patterned glass. Each gives a different effect, from a traditional leaded door panel to a clean modern frosted screen.

Can you match the leaded glass in a period property?

Yes. We design and make leaded panels to match traditional patterns such as Queen Anne and Jacobean, as well as Mackintosh-style and modern designs, so a replacement or new panel sits in keeping with the rest of the property.

What is sandblasted glass used for?

Sandblasting gives glass a frosted, etched finish that adds privacy while still letting light through. It is used for door panels, screens, partitions and windows, as a full frost, a border or a design, where you want light but not a clear view.

Can you put a design or logo on the glass?

Yes. We can sandblast a pattern, border, design or logo into the glass, so it works for a home feature or a shopfront and office. Tell us what you have in mind and we will work it up.

What is brilliant or crystal cut glass?

Brilliant or crystal cutting is a decorative cut pattern worked into the glass that catches and reflects light. It is often used to enhance mirrors, door glass and feature panels, on its own or alongside leadwork.

Can decorative glass be made as safety glass?

In many cases, yes. Where the location calls for safety glass, such as a door or low-level panel, we can build the decorative effect into toughened or laminated glass so it meets the regulations and looks the part.

Do you fit it, or just supply it?

Either. We can design, make and fit decorative glass across central Scotland, or supply the finished panel for your joiner or builder to install. We will advise on the best route for your job.

Can you repair or replace a damaged leaded panel?

Often, yes. Send us a photo of the panel and its rough sizes and we will tell you whether it can be repaired or is better remade to match, so a period door or window keeps its character.

How do I get a price?

Send a description or photo of what you want, with rough sizes, through the form, or call us. For a one-off design we will talk it through and come back with a quote. The consultation is free.

Do you work across Scotland?

Yes. We make decorative glasswork in our Falkirk factory and fit across central Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling.
