What a glass balustrade is

A glass balustrade is a toughened safety glass barrier that protects a staircase, landing, balcony or deck while keeping the light and the view. AJ Glass designs, makes and fits them across central Scotland, both frameless and with a stainless steel handrail, made to your exact run.

Systems and fixings

Every run is made to measure, and the system sets the look and the fixings on show. Any system can be topped with a brushed or polished stainless steel handrail.

Frameless channel: glass set into a slim aluminium base shoe for a clean, post-free run with no visible fixings.

Standoff and point-fixed: glass held by polished stainless steel fixings, a popular look on stairs and landings.

Clamped with handrail: toughened glass held by stainless steel glass clamps under a handrail, robust and cost-effective.

What to know before you buy

A balustrade has to be safe as well as good-looking, so most people want to know it meets the regulations, suits their space and is priced clearly. Here is the short version.

Safe and building-reg compliant

A balustrade that guards a drop is covered by building regulations. We use toughened safety glass, and toughened-laminated where the glass forms the barrier itself, so if it is ever damaged it holds together and stays in place.

Frameless or with a handrail

Frameless gives the cleanest, most open look. A clamped system with a stainless steel handrail is more cost-effective and very robust. We talk you through both for your space and budget before anything is made.

Made and fitted by us

We make your balustrade in our own Falkirk factory and fit it with our own team, indoors or out. One job, one standard, with no flat-pack kit and no subcontractors.

Glass balustrade questions

The things we're asked most, answered straight.

Are glass balustrades safe and building-reg compliant?

Yes. A balustrade that guards a drop is covered by building regulations, and we make ours from toughened safety glass, using toughened-laminated where the glass forms the barrier itself. If it is ever damaged it holds together rather than falling away.

Frameless or with a handrail, which should I choose?

Frameless gives the cleanest, most open look and suits a feature staircase. A clamped system with a stainless steel handrail is more cost-effective and very robust. We will talk you through both for your space and budget.

What glass do you use?

Toughened safety glass as standard, and toughened-laminated where the glass acts as the fall barrier. It is the same glass principle used in shopfronts and balconies, made to take a knock and stay safe.

Can I have a balustrade outside on a balcony or deck?

Yes. The glass and the stainless steel fixings are made for outdoor use, so a balustrade works just as well on a balcony, deck or terrace as it does indoors. It frames the view rather than blocking it.

Do I need posts, or can it be frameless?

You do not need posts. A frameless channel system sets the glass into a slim base shoe with no posts at all. If you prefer, a clamped or standoff system uses small stainless steel fixings instead.

Can you match a stainless steel handrail to it?

Yes. We supply brushed or polished stainless steel handrails to top any balustrade, fixed to the glass or the wall, and we can match the finish to your other fittings.

How do you fix it, and will it damage my stairs or floor?

Fixings are set into the floor, the stair string or the wall depending on the system, and finished neatly. We plan the fixing points at the survey so the job is tidy and the structure stays sound.

How much does a glass balustrade cost?

It depends on the length, the system and whether it is internal or external. Send your rough measurements and a photo through the form below, or call us, and we will come back with a quote. The quote is free and there is no call-out fee.

Do you fit across Scotland?

Yes. We are based in Falkirk and design, make and fit balustrades across central Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling.

How long does it take?

Most balustrades are surveyed, made in our own factory and fitted within a few weeks of the order being confirmed. We will give you a clear timescale when you order.
