Specialist and safety glass
Toughened, laminated and fire-rated safety glass, cut to size for homes, trade and commercial jobs. Made in our Falkirk factory, fitted across Scotland.

What specialist glass is
Specialist glass is glass made to do a specific job: take impact, hold together when broken, cut sound, or resist fire. AJ Glass supplies toughened, laminated and fire-rated glass cut to your sizes, made to recognised British and European standards, for anywhere the regulations or the use call for safety glass.

Types of specialist glass
We cut all of these to your sizes, with polished edges and any holes or cut-outs you need.
Toughened safety glass: up to five times stronger than ordinary glass and, if broken, it shatters into small blunt pieces. Made to BS EN 12150.
Laminated safety glass: panes bonded with a PVB or EVA interlayer that holds the glass together if broken, and cuts noise for a quieter room.
Fire-rated glass: fire resistance in set periods of 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180 minutes, in clear or wired options to suit doors, screens and partitions.

What to know before you buy
With safety glass, people want to know which type they need, where the regulations require it, and that it can be cut to size. Here is the short version.
Which type you need
Toughened glass is stronger and breaks safely into small pieces. Laminated holds together when broken and cuts noise. Fire-rated holds back fire for a set time. Tell us the use and we will advise.
Where regulations require it
Safety glass is required in critical locations such as doors and side panels, low-level glazing near the floor, and around stairs and bathrooms. If you are replacing glass there, it must be toughened or laminated.
Cut to size, supply or fit
We supply toughened glass cut to size, with polished edges and cut-outs. Note that toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every detail is set first. Supply only or supply and fit.

Specialist glass questions
The things we're asked most, answered straight.
Toughened glass is heat-treated to make it up to five times stronger than ordinary glass of the same thickness. If it breaks, it shatters into small blunt pieces rather than sharp shards. Ours is made to BS EN 12150, the British and European standard for glass in building.
Toughened glass is stronger and breaks safely into small pieces. Laminated glass is two or more panes bonded with an interlayer that holds the glass together if it breaks, so it stays in the frame. Laminated also cuts noise and adds security, so the right choice depends on the job.
Safety glass is required in critical locations such as doors and side panels, low-level glazing near the floor, and glazing around stairs and bathrooms. If you are replacing glass in any of these spots, it must be toughened or laminated rather than ordinary glass.
Yes. We supply toughened glass cut to size, with polished edges and any holes or cut-outs you need. Note that toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after it is toughened, so every detail is set before toughening, which is why exact sizes matter.
Fire-rated glass resists fire for a set period, rated in minutes: 30, 60, 90, 120 or 180 minutes under the European Standards. The higher the rating, the longer it holds back fire and, in some types, heat. We supply clear and wired options to suit doors, screens and partitions.
Yes. The interlayer that holds laminated glass together also dampens sound, so laminated glass cuts noise noticeably compared with a single pane. It is a common choice for rooms facing busy roads as well as for safety and security.
Yes. We supply cut-to-size toughened, laminated and fire-rated glass to both trade and the public, with supply only or supply and fit. Send us your cutting sizes and spec for a price.
Yes. If a door or panel has ordinary glass where the regulations now call for safety glass, we measure, make and fit toughened or laminated glass to replace it, usually within a couple of weeks.
Send your sizes, the glass type or the use, and a photo if it helps, through the form, or call us. If you are not sure which safety glass you need, tell us the location and we will advise.
Yes. We fit across central Scotland and can cut specialist glass to your sizes and deliver it.
